Quilt Projects

The following quilt (utilizing state-of-the-art computer technology) won the blue ribbon at the Washington State Fair at Puyallup, Washington in September, 2000.

THE QUILT

When Rie Munoz came down for the Frye Art Museum tour and exhibition, she was presented with a quilt by friends, Harry and Claradell Shedd. This remarkable quilt took Claradell over 3 months, working 12 hours a day to complete (1000 hours). It's about 8’x8’ and covered with over 100 personal Munoz family photos that had been scanned and transferred onto fabric and then sewn to the quilt. This technology as applied to inkjet transfer is new. Scanning the images at 600 dpi took up all of her hard drive on the computer as well as 8 zip drives (but permitted achieving exceptional image resolution).  The quilt was designed utilizing quilting design software, an HP scanner, and an HP inkjet printer.  After the traditional quilt had been established, approximately 80 appliques were applied.   Claradell's six sewing machines and serger aided in the effort.
There are pictures of Rie in the U.S. Army WACs, as a child, with her parents, photos of her immediate family, close friends, dogs, and sketches. Many items have been added to recognize what has been sensitive and meaningful to Rie's life.  Music boxes adorn to animate telling Rie's story.

We had the opportunity to display this quilt at several galleries while Rie was on tour. It almost stole the show and even out shined Rie's Aubusson tapestry, "Loading Crab Pots." Everybody enjoyed marveling over the quilt and its leading-edge  technology.

One thing not on the quilt are Rie Munoz images (except some sketches.) This omission was intentional as to focus on the personal aspect of Rie's life, not the paintings for which she is internationally famous.

After being viewed in the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall during the four-day PacRim Artists' Exhibition for which Rie Munoz was named PacRim Artist of the Year 2000, the quilt will find its home in the Rie Munoz Art Gallery in Juneau, Alaska.    Thank you very much Claradell and Harry Shedd for this beautiful gift to Rie! We shall treasure it always.

When Rie Munoz was named "Pac Rim Artist of the Year 2000", she was honored with a week-long showing of her works at Seattle Center. Chosen as the centerpiece of the exhibit was this quilt commemorating Rie's life. Claradell Shedd was asked to spend several days at Seattle Center to display and explain the technology involved in executing the quilt. Over 8,000 people, including the graphic and publishing community, viewed and listened to the techniques employed in this "first" in the industry.

Quilting Party - December, 2001; Juneau, AK
A commemorative quilt crafted by Claradell Shedd was presented to Rie for her 80th birthday and now hangs permanently at the Rie Muñoz Gallery in Juneau, Alaska. See the quilt on our web site under News, Past News Archives, November 1999, The Quilt. Rie invited every person who appears in this quilt to a showing at her gallery last week. Over 100 people attended this fun event and marveled at the incredible job Claradell did. The quilt features many old family photos which were provided by Juan. The photos were scanned by computer and then transferred to fabric and sewn onto the colorful quilt. Claradell Shedd chose not to use the artwork of Rie Muñoz and instead focused on Rie's life. The quilt included photos of Rie's parents, brothers, her twin sons, family friends, dogs, and events. The commemorative quilt was also the feature showpiece for our Juneau Gallery Walk. Over 1,000 people flowed through Rie's gallery over the holiday season and admired this work.
