Margaret McDaniel (1921 - 2010)
Margaret Ann Mc Daniel, 83 of Columbus, OH died Monday, December
20, 2010. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 14, 1927
to the late Vernon K. and Willa Ashford. She moved to Columbus
in 1989 to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She was a graduate
of North High School and Drake University both in Des Moines where
she earned a Bachelor of Education and was a member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority.
She was a disabled veteran of the Korean
Conflict where she served with the U.S. Navy, being the first
African American female to enlist from the state of Iowa. She
was a member and elder at Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church in
Des Moines. She taught Sunday School, volunteered with the United
Way and was former president for the Board of the Des Moines Youth
Symphony. She loved to draw and paint with watercolors. Her essence
was her ability to find joy in any situation. She was a devoted
mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed by all
who knew her. She is preceded in death by her daughter Suzanne
Mc Daniel Hayes, two sisters Elizabeth and Constance Ashford and
her former husband James D. Mc Daniel.
She is survived by daughter Prudence Mc Daniel,
son-in-law Bill Hayes, grandchildren James, Hannah and Grace Hayes,
brother Vernon K. Ashford Jr., sisters Faye Jones and Sandra Gaiter,
many nephews, nieces and their families. A memorial service will
be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Claremont
Retirement Village, 7041 Bent Tree Blvd., Columbus, OH. Inurnment
at a later date in Des Moines. Schedinger Worthington Chapel assisting
the family. Memorial contributions may be made to D.A.V. or the
Marian Anderson String Quartet Community Music School Scholarships,
