Cecil Wayne Dunn

Following North High graduation, Cecil attended St. Ambrose in Davenport, IA, where he was in the US Navy Flight Training Program. He was discharged from the US Navy in 1945. He then entered the University of Iowa on the GI Bill, graduating in 1947. Cecil Dunn was involved in the banking industry for over fifty years. He served as president of the Iowa Banking Association. During the term of Governor Robert Ray, Mr. Dunn served as the Superintendent of Banking for the State of Iowa. After his term as Superintendent of Banking, he became the CEO of Security Savings Bank in Eagle Grove and Manchester, IA. Mr. Dunn was active in the community affairs of Eagle Grove, IA, and was a generous booster of the University of Iowa. In 1994, at his North High 50-year reunion, Mr. Dunn proposed and worked to provide scholarship funds for North High seniors. At the time of his Navy enlistment, his next of kin was listed as Lee A. Dunn, 1502 46th Street, Des Moines, IA.

Cecil W. Dunn, prominent banker and civic leader from Eagle Grove, died at his home in Des Moines on February 14, 1996, after a prolonged battle with lung cancer and heart disease. He was 69 years old.
Dunn's two bank holding companies, with offices in Eagle Grove, Clarion, Goldfield, Manchester, and Cedar Rapids, were the culmination of a self-made banking career that began in Dallas Center in 1948. He subsequently worked for Carleton D. Beh, whom he always considered his greatest mentor, from 1954 to 1958. In 1958, he began his association with Security Savings Bank in Eagle Grove, an association that grew to involve management and ownership of the bank and remained his primary occupational interest until his untimely death.
Dunn served the state of Iowa as superintendent of banking from 1973 to 1975, and also served as director or officer for multiple boards, including the American Bankers Association, Community Bankers Council, Iowa Bankers Association, Trinity Regional Hospital Board, Iowa Central Community College Board, Eagle Grove Community School Board (treasurer), Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce, Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church Board, and others.
His lifelong interest in community service, philanthropy and advancement of educational opportunity earned him the "Hawk of the Year" Award in 1995 from the University of Iowa, the 1995 Albaugh Award for community Service, the Iowa Governors Award for Volunteerism in 1994, and numerous other citations.
Dunn, who always characterized his early self as a "a bit of a hellion," was born in Winterset and grew up in Des Moines. He enlisted in the Nay after graduating from North High School. He attended St. Ambrose College and graduated from the University of Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Rusty; three sons, Michael Dunn of Manchester, Martin Dunn of Des Moines, and Scott Dunn of New York City; and five grandchildren, Tirzah Wedewer, Nathaniel Dunn, Gabriella Dunn, and Pat and Sara Breitbach.

Cecil W. Dunn, who worked in the banking industry for almost 50 years and served as state banking examiner for two years, died Wednesday at home of a heart ailment. He was 69.
Mr. Dunn, of 3014 Fox Run, was born in Winterset and grew up in Des Moines. A Navy veteran, he worked in Dallas Center before coming to Eagle Grove in 1949. He was banking superintendent from 1973 to 1975 and president of Security Savings Bank in Eagle Grove for many years.
Memorial services will be held in Eagle Grove and in Clive. The first will be today, 02/16/96 at 1:30pm at Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. A second service will be held Saturday, 02/17/96, at Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.
Survivors include his wife, Rusty; three sons, Michael Dunn of Manchester, Martin Dunn of Des Moines, and Scott Dunn of New York City; and five grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the C.W. Dunn Scholarship Fund at Security Savings Bank.
