Fred Emerling, Jr.

Fred was a member of North High's class of August, 1940. He enlisted in the US Army on February 10, 1941 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. At the time of his enlistment, he was single with no dependents. His service number was 20704487. It appears that Fred enlisted with another 1940 North High graduate, Eugene R. Brown. Fred's next of kin is listed as his mother, Alvena Emerling at 1315 Harding Road, Des Moines, Iowa.

He was asssigned to the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, as a member of the 2nd Platoon of A Company. He was killed on January 31, 1943 during the Tunisia campaign in North Africa. His death was reported as KIA; Killed in Action. At the time of his death, his rank was Sgt - Sergeant. Purple Heart

Information obtained from the American Battle Monuments Commission shows that Fred is buried at the North African /American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunisia. Buried at: Plot E, Row 12, Grave 13.

*M - Missing. This is an individual who is reported as missing and later was determined to be dead.

*FOD - Finding of Death. Findings of death fall within Public Law 490 and its amendments and are made when there is either conclusive proof that the person is dead or equally overwhelming evidence that under the circumstances the person could not have remained alive.
