Bob enlisted in the Iowa National Guard when he was 16 (he lied about his age). He was called for active duty with the Guard in January, 1941 while still a student at North High. His graduating class would have been in 1941. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone where he was in the Quartermasters Corps. His rank was Technical Corporal. He was there for about 3 years.
