Charles was a member of North High's class of June, 1967. Charles enlisted in the US Army and, after his training, he arrived in Vietnam on December 11, 1968. Charles's next of kin was listed as William Russell, 340 SE Leland, Des Moines, IA. His Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was 12B20 Combat Engineer and his rank was Specialist Four. He was assigned to the 919th Engineer Company, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. His service number was 68013602. In
December, 1968, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment's headquarters was
located at Blackhorse Base Camp (LZ Blackhorse) in South Vietnam. The
Blackhorse Base Camp was in the southern part of South Vietnam approximately
55km due east of Saigon in Long Khanh province in III Corps. Known as
the Blackhorse Regiment, the 11th Armored Cavalry usually operated in
War Zone C and Tay Ninh province. Beginning in April, 1969, the regiment
was placed under operational control of the 1st Air Cavalry Division
in preparation for and during the Cambodian Invasion. Blackhorse Base Camp was carved out of dense and rugged jungle that was located at Long Giao, 10 miles South of the Vietnamese village of Xuan Loc in the Province of Long Khanh on Highway 2. It was the home of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment and its supporting units like, "Red Devils", 919th Engineer Company (Armor), the 37th Medical Company, 541st Military Intelligence Detachment, and others. Charles was killed in action on May 12, 1969 in Binh Long province by small arms fire, and his body was recovered. His service number was 68013602.
