General John Pope (T-AP-110) After shakedown General John Pope sailed for Newport News 5 September
          1943 with over 6,000 troops and civilians bound for Greenock, Scotland;
and, after disembarking her passengers there, returned to Norfolk, Virginia
          25 September. From 6 October to 19 November she made a troop-carrying
voyage to Brisbane, Australia; and, after touching Townsville and Milne
Bay, put in at San Francisco on the latter date. Underway again 10 December
with over 5,000 troops for the Pacific fighting, General John Pope debarked
them at Noumea 23 December and returned via Pago Pago to San Francisco
          10 January 1944 with 2,500 veterans.
In the months that followed, General John Pope sailed
in support of the giant amphibious offensive on New Guinea's northern
coast, spearheaded by Rear Admiral Barbey's famed VII Amphibious Force.
On a 3 month round-trip voyage out of San Francisco, beginning 23
January, she took troops to Guadalcanal, Auckland, and Noumea, and
brought 1,300 men back to San Francisco 9 March. General John Pope
then embarked another full complement of troops, including the 1st
Filipino Infantry Regiment, and sailed 6 April for Noumea and Oro
            Bay, New Guinea. Korea...The spring of 1945 saw a round-trip troop-carrying
voyage begin in San Francisco 26 March, which took her to Manila,
Leyte, and Biak before returning 21 May. General John Pope next stood
out from the Golden Gate once more 2 June 1945, this time bound for
Marseilles, where 5,242 troops were embarked and taken to Manila.

Reinstated on the Navy List 20 July 1950, General John Pope was assigned
to MSTS 1 August. During the Korean War she carried American troops
to Japan and Korea to take part in the giant effort to hold back the
Communist invasion. Following the war, General John Pope continued
to sail to Japanese and Korean ports on troop rotation duties, finally
being placed in reduced operational status at Seattle 14 May 1955.
The veteran transport was returned to the Maritime Administration
(MARAD) and entered the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Olympia,
            Washington, 5 September 1958

 **7th Infantry Division
From 1953 to 1971, the 7th Infantry Division defended the Korean Demilitarized
Zone. Its main garrison was Camp Casey, South Korea. During these
occupation duties, the division saw a complete reorganization in compliance
with the Reorganization Objective Army Divisions plan. The division's
former headquarters company grew into the 1st Brigade, 7th Infantry
Division while the 13th Infantry Brigade was reactivated as the 2nd
Brigade, 7th Infantry Division. The 14th Infantry Brigade was reactivated
as the 3rd Brigade, 7th Infantry Division. In 1965 the division received
its distinctive unit insignia, which alluded to its history during
the Korean War. On 2 April 1971, the division returned to the United
States and was inactivated at Fort Lewis, Washington.

 ***Chorwon, Korea
Chorwon is a kun, or county, in Kangwon province, North Korea. Portions
of it were once a single county together with the county of the same
name in South Korea; other portions were added from neighboring counties
in the 1956 reorganization of local governments. After the initial
division of Korea, the entire county lay to the Northern side of the
dividing line, but in the course of the Korean War part of the county
            was taken by the South.
****Oakland Army BaseThe Oakland Army Base, also known as the Oakland Army Terminal, was
a former United States Army base in the San Francisco Bay Area of
California. The base was located on the Oakland waterfront just south
of the eastern entrance to the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge.

Construction of the base commenced in 1941, as an expansion of the
San Francisco Port of Embarkation based at Fort Mason on the San Francisco
waterfront. Initially named the Oakland Sub-Port of the San Francisco
Port of Embarkation, the base was renamed the Oakland Army Base in
1944. The installation moved in excess of 8.5 million tons of cargo
during World War II, and 7.2 million tons of cargo passed through
the terminal during the Korean War.

In 1946, the Oakland Army Base expanded to incorporate the administrative
and cantonment area of the Port formerly known as Camp John T. Knight
in honor of World War I Brigadier General John Thornton Knight.

In 1955 the San Francisco Port of Embarkation became the U.S. Army
Transportation Terminal Command Pacific, and the Oakland Army Base
became the Oakland Army Terminal. In 1964 the headquarters of the
command moved from Fort Mason to the Oakland Army Terminal, and in
1966 the terminal was renamed back to the Oakland Army Base.
