| DAVID W. OXLEY FINCASTLE,
VA published on June 22, 2004/Des Moines Register Dr. David W. Oxley, 68,
of Fincastle, VA died Sunday, June 20, 2004.Services will be conducted at 3 p.m.
Saturday at Oakley's Roanoke Chapel in Roanoke, VA. Dr. Oxley was born on
October 11, 1935. He received his B.A. from Drake University in 1961 and his M.D.
from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1965. David served a rotating
internship at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital from June 1965 until June of 1966.
He served his residency in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology at the Alexander Hospital
in Alexandria, VA under Richard E. Palmer, Director of Laboratories from June
1966 to July 1970. Between 1970 and 1972, he was the Staff Pathologist at
Alexandria Hospital. His work extended to forensic autopsies for Northern Virginia
and the Alexandria/Arlington, VA area. In 1971, David was certified by the American
Board of Pathology and the American Board of Pathology in Forensic Pathology in
1975. He retired in 1999 as Chief Medical Examiner for the Southwest District
of the Commonwealth of Virginia after 27 years of service. David was a member
of numerous medical organizations and was the author and coauthor of many medical
publications. Dr. Oxley was a noted lecturer and over the years taught classes
at the Virginia Police Academy and was an expert in the field of ballistics. He
was a Sergeant (E5) in the U.S. Marine Corps., serving active duty from 1954 to
1957, MOS 2533 Radiotelegraph Operator, Colonel MC, USAR 56th Station Hospital
(500 bed) Richmond, VA, Pathologist/Surgeon MOS 61U. He was also on active duty
from January 8 to May 7, 1991 in Desert Storm, serving as Forensic Pathologist
AFME, Port Mortuary in Dover, DE. David was the recipient of the Army Achievement
Medal (three awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal (Desert Storm) and the
Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (prior USMC service). Dr Oxley is survived
by his wife of 34 1/2 years, Jean Oxley; a son, Doug Oxley of Des Moines; a daughter
and son-in-law, Kate and Eric Lear of Roanoke, VA; two grandchildren, Chelsea
and Alex Lear; and a brother, Dan Oxley of Roanoke, VA. The family wishes
to extend a special thanks to Holly Wagner for her dedicated care to David. The
family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
