United States Military Academy
Class of 1958

G-2; Then
1954--a short eternity ago. Thirty-two strong, we decended on the Lost Fifties and Gung-two, amid clothing displays, company boards, and cries of "Take Brigade." Four years, three upper classes, two tacs, and one heck of a lot of friends later, we're separating again--ready for what lies ahead because of what has gone behind. The twenty-four who made it have a lot of memories--Biff's constructive criticism, Weezy's brown boy, Shunk's "Hey Hugh," Edgie's 20-20, Guspadene's teeth, Herren's pipe, the amours of Huff, Easley, and Forman. Hugh's Sunday School classes, Palmer's Rebel yell, and Fay's "This place leaves something to be desired." No one will forget Kusciusko, Fatty Arbuckle, Moose Arbruster, Doctor McCauley, Herr Depew, Bird-dog, Fluffy, Tubby, Wing-Ding, Looney, Bellie, Lump Lump and, last but not least, Spuds and Ollie.

G2; Cow Class, Taken where, taken October 13, 1956
Note from George Lawton: You usually have five officers in each company (the CO, XO, and three platoon leaders). The picture clearly shows only 4 officers.
According to the "Official Register of Officers and Cadets" For the Academic Year Ending 4 June 1957 (our Cow Year), the following were Corporals: Bujalski, Conrad, Day, Fay, Herren, Huff, Julian, Lawton & Palmer.
However, according to this same document, both Conrad and Smith were discharged from the Academy in January 1957 for deficiency in academics, so I'd say they could have been in this picture. I there believe, the person I named as Smith in the picture is probably Jim Waller.
Claradell notes: When I restored the left side of the photo, I supplied that cadet with a tar bucket. Perhaps I should have placed a Shakeo or plume on that person's hat. I noticed that all in the front row except Wright were wearing plumes. Does that mean that Morgan's headgear should bear a shakeo?

06/25/13: Note from Jack Bujalski:
G-2 Cow Class Photo in Full Dress Gray. Morgan's tar bucket should indeed have a feathered plume on it. Note that all the cadets with sabers have the feathered plume on on their tar bucket, which means they were officers. Those with white straps over both shoulders were not officers and had the standard tar bucket plume. The only time this could have happened is in the Fall when the Firsties were all at the Army-Michigan football game. With respect to George Lawton's comment that a company only had 5 officers, I cannot contradict him. However, cadets that served on battalion or higher staffs returned to their company for class photos when they were taken.
Note: 06/25/13: I put a plume on Morgan's tar bucket. Claradell

Supe's Sentry Caper

In November of 1956, refurbishing work was being done on the west side of North Barracks. The workers were a bit careless with some of their equipment, and one day a fairly long rope was noticed, discarded off to one side. Thinking that a good piece of rope like that should not go unused, I started mulling possibilities. Somehow, the rope, the Supe's sentry box, and Arvin Gym came together in my mind. The rope was not long enough to reach the top of the gym, but would do quite well in reaching the top of the one-story projection on the side of the gym facing the lost 50's.

Discussion with my roomies, Harry Shedd and Coleman Conrad, resulted in development of a plan which called for two teams; one to get the rope and climb to the destination roof, the other to fetch the sentry box. We obviously needed more manpower, so we went to our G-2 classmates. A briefing was held, teams formed, and a decision reached to execute the plan at the next after-taps football rally for the Army-Navy Game. All were to wear black parkas with a white handerchief tied around their wrist for identification.

The next rally began, and we executed the plan. The first problem came when we tried to move the sentry box. It tipped without much trouble, but we discovered the base was heavily weighted, and we struggled to lift it. We had, at most, six lifters; however, there were cadets within earshot, and we soon had more than enough willing helpers. They knew not where we were going or what we were going to do with the sentry box, but the temptation to do something, anything, with the Supe's sentry box was too much for them to resist.

We arrived at our destination to find the other team on the roof with the two ends of the rope hanging down. It was a long rope, permitting us to lay the sentry box on top of the two end sections, and the ends would still reach up to the roof so the box could be rolled up. Again, the unexpected weight almost did us in, but by this time there were plenty of cadets available, many from H-2. Several cadets scrambled up to the roof to help on the rope while as many as could find room to get a hand on the sentry box lifted from the ground. Once the box was on the roof and upright, everyone rapidly dispersed to the rally, and the rope was returned to were we found it, once more to be lonely.

The Commandant's staff did not seem to appreciate our efforts. Fortunately, they did not have any suspects, although they logically narrowed the suspect pool to the Second Regiment. Therefore, the Second Regiment company commanders were summoned to Colonel Oglesby's office where they drew lots to see which company would restore the sentry box to its proper resting place. L-2 won! Naturally, the work was delegated to the L-2 plebes. The box stood on the roof for several days before someone figured out a way to get it down. I suppose nobody looked for the lonely rope. ...Jack Bujalski

On 08/07/04, Bob Tierney wrote: "It was the occasion of
a celebration commemorating a gold in Alcove Volley Ball for the standout team of undersigned (customarily in the background) and FM Wright (customarily in the fore-ground with the cake) against JW McCauley (also in the background … never again heard from, BTW) and Mr. Ease exhibiting usual distain and sore-headedness by coming as Hitler. Note the Festivus (for the rest of us) pole was often featured at such soirees in Garbage II; judging by the expressions on the faces of the attendees, the ceremony seems to have been going quite well."
06/25/13: Comment from Jack Bujalski on above photo:
Reference the photo that has Fred Easley front and center wearing a mustache with Bob Pointer on his right holding a white sheet of paper. You (Claradell) received this photo from me. If you still have it, the original is much more informative than this copy. If Bob Tierney’s dissertation is with regard to this photo, then interesting as the dissertation is, it is totally incorrect. This photo was taken in the room of Harry, Pete (Shunk) and me on 1 May 1957 (Room 5251, 52nd Division of Barracks, 5th Floor, room at top of stairs on left--top floor on side of building away from gym). We were celebrating May Day. Note that the guy to Bob Pointer’s right (face not in photo and I can’t identify him) is holding a cake, partially obscured by Bob’s head. You can make out a hammer and sickle decorating the top of the cake. Around the hammer and sickle was written “Comes a Revolution”. The cake came from the bakery in Highland Falls that took phone orders and delivered to cadets during release from quarters (30 minutes before Taps). The paper Bob is holding has writing on it, but I can’t make much of it out. Basically, it was a threat to shape up or be purged. I can’t identify the guy standing tall in the back, between Brad and Fred. My best guess would be George Huff, or maybe Jim McCauley. Pete Shunk should have been in the room, but this guy does not look like Pete. I also do not know if the guy identified as Eveleth really is Barry; looks more like Wayne Day to me. What Bob Tierney refers to as a Festivus pole was our version of a May Pole, decorated with B-robes and white belts. I believe it was not a pole at all, but hung from the light fixture on a coat hanger. Checking out your Roommates page, I see that Eliot, Weiss and Depew roomed together Cow year, so maybe Dave Depew is one of the unknowns.
