From 1958 Howitzer: An Air Force brat who comes from a long line of
career officers, Jim held the Academic Department at bay with seemingly
no effort. A strong believer in physical fitness, he kept himself in
shape as a cadet and will undoubtedly continue to do so. A versatile
athlete coupled with natural ability, Jim will be assured of success
in the years to come. |

| Fred Easley had a
front row seat when the border was closed on August 13, 1961. His tank platoon
stood face to face with ten T-55 tanks, shown here at Checkpoint Charlie. Most
of us in Germany had orders home cancelled. Field exercises were accelerated.
It was a tense moment for all.

| After resigning in 1961, I spent
a few very enjoyable years at the University of Florida and was
rewarded for having a great time anth an MD degree in 1966. Walter
Reed Medical Center for post graduate work, where I actually treated
some of classmates' families. While on the Proct/Sigmoid service,
I waited zealously for some of my old tacts to show up, but the
world must have gotten out that I was going to return the favors
received at the Point. Well, what arefantasies for? I returned
to Florida and have been in private practice forf 30 years. Since
medicine is slowly but systematically being destroyed by the combined
efforts of the government and the lawyers, I have been attempting
to learn the air charter business. I am currently flying a Beech
Baron, Lear 25 and 35 and, if any of you want to fly anywhere,
full life support medairevac or just charter, give me a call.
Other than flying, my passion has been racquetball (copilot in
picture notwithstanding), and I have worked my way into the national
senior rankings on occasion. You can imagine my disappointment
when Fred Easley informed me that George Huff is going to avoid
the reunion because he might have to play me. Oh welll, first
the tacts, and now Huff. My son Robert wroks for Eastern in the
crime capital of the world, Miami, and Michael is still in school,
althought he will go into aviation as well. Neither son is married,
so I have not joined the Grandfather Club with many ou--thank
God. All in all, it's been fun, but I still find it hard to believe
we are all in the 2nd half century. I look forward to seeing all
of you.

My most vivid memory while at West
Point was the unexpected death of my father, General James W.
McCauley, USAF, on March 9, 1958, following an acute heart attack.
He was only 57 and still on active duty. He had encouraged and
motivated me regarding getting into the USMA from as early as
I can remember. That he did not see me graduate saddens me to
this day. I like to think he would have been equally proud, if
not somewhat surprised, that I became a physician. I was the typical
Air Force brat, experiencing frequent moves, new schools, and
many friends. I met one of my G-2 roommates, Fred Easley, in the
fifth grade at Maxwell AFB, AL. Four years at West Point, graduation,
marriage to my high school sweetheart, the birth of my first son,
Robert, three years in the Army, all seem a total blur. The next
five years at the University of Florida--yes, I'm part of the
Gator Nation--getting an MD degree was the "best of all possible
worlds", and after the grind at the Point, seemingly easy.
I spent one of the best years of my life at Walter Reed Hospital,
for postgraduate requirements, where Carol Ann and I had our second
son, Michael. Carl Ann succumbed to diabetes on February 29, 1972.
Single parenthoiod pressented challenges, and therfe were some
difficult years, especially for Michael. I introduced them to
flying early and both soloed on their 16th birthday. Currently
Robert is Standards Officer for Southeast Toyota, mainly flying
a Gulfstream 550 and 450. Michael has been flying Lears since
he was 18 and founded Universal Jet Aviation in 1993, has eight
Gulfstreams and several Lears on his certificate. I'm immensely
proud of both of them, although they were not very nice to me
on check rides. My third career was launched when aviation legend
Commander Harvey Hop was looking for a Medical Director with a
commercial pilot's license and instrument/multi-engine ratings.
He taught me to fly Learjets 25-35, and I learned the charter
business. I was able to get Robert and Michael involved, and they
took it from there. I feel fortunate that they both have been
able to stay in the Boca Raton area.
My young children are able to play with my grandchildren. I don't
know how many have been blessed to meet two soulmates in their
lifetime, but I know Frank Wright and I did. My copilot from the
30 year reunion book finally gave up and married me on September
27, 1997, probably because I promised a Disney World wedding.
We have two beautiful boys, Sean and Christopher--see picture
in family section (shown below). They are a joy and focus of my
life. There were a few forks in the road not taken that I regret,
but not the one that included Cindy, Sean, and Christophet/
I continue to practice medicine; however, I have cut back on the
flying. I'm content, but I worry about what kind of world is going
to be there for my children and grandchildren. |

| Fred writes: "After 22 years
of socialism, I'm quite fond of capitalism. Because I was a gypsy, Uncle Sugar
was very good to me: assignments in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Ankara (Turkey), and
Seoul come quickly to mind. The two boys were born in Turkey, and my daugher was
born in Austin, TX (that makes two Turks and a Texan). I got my Masters Degree
from the University of Texas, then two grand years in southern South America.
After leaving the Army, we settled in Santa Barbara, CA; to date it's been as
idyllic a setting as I know of in the continental U.S. Have made good money as
a Personnel Recruiter. Joanne has had great success as a Media Consultant. I married
her when she was a well-known TV newscaster in Boston (my mother-in-law assures
me had we not married, Joanne would now be Barbara Walters). Life has been good!
No earthquakes at this moment in sunny Southern California, but remember what
Santayana said: "Everthing in nature is lyrical in its ideal essence, tragic
in its fate, and comic in its existence." Here's to '58 -- in 1958, or any
year, an extremely admirable group of men!"
