Charter Member Families

In 1919, Bishop Thomas Drumm appointed Rev. James Manning as pastor. At a special board meeting held September 10, 1919, plans and specifications for a church proposed by Proudfoot, Bird, and Rawson were examined and approved. Father Manning was authorized to accept plans and bids and sign the contract for the proposed church, the cost not to exceed $16,000. The cornerstone was laid in 1919, and the church dedication was June 13, 1920. The church with its cupola had the air of a Spanish mission church. The cupola had to be removed in 1970 due to cracks and a leaking roof. The church was to accommodate approximately 300 people. On December 5, 1920, the first confirmation class of 39 was held.

A 1920 parish list shows residents from West 13th Street to Amherst and from New York Avenue to Aurora Avenue. Some of the family names on the list were Atkins, Brannen, Burken, Couch, Feeley, Fehn, Franke, Galantine, Gottner, Haffner, Holland, Jessup, Kaskie, Lydon, Matheny, McCabe, Monahan, Nemmers, Payne, Reece, Sarony, Shelledy, Shepard, Wieland, Wilfon, and Wurzer.
