John Vernon
Howard's 8th Grade Report Card |
John's wife,
Carole, preferred that John not reveal his grades. Card signed by
Sister Marie Celine.
John's comments:
Found all my All Saints report cards. Carole wants to burn them; I
want to frame them, Ha. Here are the nuns I had by year and grade.
1947-48: Sister Mary Madelene, 4th grade. Not sure on spelling-- could
be Madeleva-- bad penmanshi-- not fair she made me do 4th grade over.
1948-49: Sister Mary Baptiste; 1950-51: Sister Mary Innocentia, 5th
grade; 1951-52: Sister Mary Colette, 6th grade; 1952-53: Sister Mary
Roberta 7th grade; 1953-54: Sister Marie Celine, 8th grade. I guess
mom tossed out 2nd and 3rd grade cards-- they must have been bad because
she never threw anything away. Hope this helps on the nun list. I
bet they would be surprised that I turned out okay-- 42 yrs on the
railroad; ended up General Yardmaster on the Des Moines Division of
the Norfolk Southern RR. |

Professor Vincent Gregory Magin,
organist at St. Ambrose Cathedral (above). Musical mentor at All Saints
Parish. He would arrive unnanounced often after having partaken in
the spirits and with his case of snuff in hand. The
nuns readjusted their teaching schedules to accommodate him as he
instructed the students through Gregorian Chant. |
Buried at Calvary Hill Cemetery, Dallas,
Texas, USA; Plot: Section L. Listen to
Kyrie Eleison |
|
|
10/10/13: Received from an All Saints 1946 graduate:
OMG, Mr. Magin, immediate thoughts flash before my eyes, singing Requiem
Mass in Latin in the dark scary loft of All Saints Church. Funerals
always scared me anyway when I was young, but Mr. Magin scared me
more when he faced us, swinging his arms around, sometimes with his
snus box held in the right hand leading us with one forefinger doing
all the work on that side, while his left hand was trying to keep
up and figure out what his finger was doing, and so were we! He was
a real piece of work. I have never forgotten the repetitive Kyrie
Eleison. Had you ever heard the story that some of the Dowling boys
threw him out of a window once? I don't know if it was true or not,
but I believed it could have happened!
Speaking of Mr. Magin, I wonder what ever happened to dear heart Ms.
O'Brien (Clara Sheehan O'Brien), our dramatic teacher in grade school.
Most of the kids liked her because she was funny with her facial contortions
mouthing her words to teach us the proper way to enunciate vowels,
etc.
11/02/13: Several All Saints graduates have written speaking accolades
for Professor Magin. One male respondent said, "That incident of Mr.
Magin being thrown out of a Dowling window is false. That never would
or could have happened." |
