and now have six grandchildren. I was a stay-at-home Mom until later
when I worked with Bob in our business. Until last year, I was secretary

        | Most significant
happening in my life? Being born in the mid-1930's. I think all of us who were born around
this time were the luckiest kids of the 20th century. Growing up at
this time, we were able to spend carefree school years with a sense
of freedom, safety, and innocence that those before us and after were
not as fortunate. We had a sense of patriotism for our country and respect
for the law and for our elders. We believed that whatever we aspired
to or wished for our future was entirely possible. Memories of the events
in our lives may have left us with sadness and sometimes with regrets,
but also great joyous and happy events. Together they have given us
strength and resilience. So I believe every event in our life is significant.
They define who we were and who we are today.

        | Graduated from Iowa State
University with a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Transportation
Engineering. Began employment with the Iowa Department of Transportation
in 1957 as a survey party chief and bridge inspector on I-35/80 around
Des Moines and on the I-235 freeway. The next 45 years were spent as
a Resident Maintenance Engineer, Public Hearings Engineer, Long Range
Systems Planning Engineer, Director of Equipment Services, Director
of Transportation Inventory, and State Maintenance Engineer. I retired
from the Iowa DOT in 2002 and since then have been an independent consulting
engineer working half-time for the American Association of State Highway
and Transportation Officials. I met Jeanette C. Rinker while attending Iowa State, and we were married
in 1958 at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames. We have four children
and eight grandchildren. We feel fortunate that our children all live
within an eight-hour drive, so getting together is a matter of schedule
          prioritizing.
My work has required technical paper writing and presentation. Jeanette
and often the older grandchildren have accompanied me to conferences
in Japan, Germany, Austria, Sweden, and several vacation spots in the
United States, so life isn't all work and no play. Jeanette and I moved
to the Northcrest Community here in Ames, so it is just a matter of
locking the door when we leave, and let others do the maintenance. Northcrest
is a complete retirement community with health care center and an Alzheimer's
unit, so our address is a permanent one.

        | Fondest Memories of High
School: The news that Younkers Tearoom was going to be restored brought back
memories of our Senior Banquet held there. My cocktail-length aqua formal
dress that I wore, I recently sold at a vintage shop in Iowa City. After
the program, we had theatre tickets for a choice of movies to round
          out the evening.
I also loved going to the basketball and football games, especially
the out-of-town ones. I have continued that pastime here in Iowa City
for 56 years. Now I live within walking distance of Kinnick Stadium.

        | Comments (since graduation): People seem to be amused when I tell them our school colors were pink
and green. Seems that the pink was dropped at some time.

        | Most significant happening
in my life? It seems to me that everything is significant. Sometimes we just don't
recongize those little things that make a difference in our lives. I
think that adopting and rearing a baby boy and later a baby girl played
an important part. Now that they are each in their 40's, successful,
and have families of their own, there is a sense of satisfaction.
